The BBC came under fire from football fans on Sunday after millions missed a bizarre own goal from Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

Disasi accidentally lobbed his own goalkeeper from more than 30 yards out but viewers didn’t see the incident because a replay was being shown at the time.

Chelsea led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer in the first half of the quarter-final tie at Stamford Bridge.

But Leicester were given a gift by Disasi six minutes after the break to reduce the deficit to one and keep their Wembley dream alive.

However, the TV directors missed the goal because they were showing a replay of a previous Chelsea attack.

When the coverage returned to the live action, the ball had already beaten Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and was bouncing into the hosts’ net.

Fans had to wait for another replay to see why and how Leicester had scored.

Disasi was put under pressure by Foxes striker Patson Daka and the Frenchman attempted to pass back to Sanchez.

However, he got far too much on the pass, while Sanchez was stranded out of his goal and couldn’t get back to stop it.

Fans immediately took to social media to vent their anger at the BBC for missing the goal.

One wrote on X: “Only the BBC could miss the most bizarre goal of the season because they’re still showing a replay.”

Another put: “Classic BBC. Missed it. Still talking about Chelsea.”

A third put: “BBC showing a replay and the balls in the net. Muppets.”

Many took a similar view, with another writing: “Terrible coverage by the BBC. While another posted: “Absolutely shocking coverage.”

Chelsea had a chance of their own quickly after the own goal which the BBC again almost missed.

A fan wrote: “BBC managed to miss the Leicester goal, whilst showing a replay, then compound their mistake by almost missing a Chelsea reply whilst showing the move that led to Leicester’s goal. Shoddy Work.”

It is the second FA Cup quarter-final the BBC have shown this weekend, with ITV providing live coverage of the other two.

They had the rights to Saturday’s match between Manchester City and Newcastle, which the holders won 2-0.

One fan wrote: “BBC football coverage is the worst in the world.”

It was a nightmare moment for Disasi and Leicester were soon level at 2-2.

Former Arsenal academy star Stephy Mavididi scored a screamer to equalise for the Championship side.

Leicester were then reduced to 10 men when Callum Doyle was sent off for denying Nicolas Jackson a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The winner will play in the semi-final at Wembley on the weekend of April 20/21.
