The Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 101-98 in overtime on Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in their WNBA semifinal, with Angel Reese sinking the biggest free throws of her playoff career, twice, to seal it. USA Today's winners-and-losers report had Reese making two with 15 seconds left in regulation to put Atlanta up three, then two more with four seconds left in overtime for the final margin.

The Dream, the fourth seed and in the semifinals for the first time since 2018, had already beaten the defending champions 92-82 in Game 1 behind their defence and pace. Game 2 asked a different question: could they close? Trailing teams in a short series do not lose games so much as lose possessions, and the Liberty, with a championship core used to these nights, forced overtime and nearly escaped. Reese's line in the first report was about composure as much as points; free throws in the last seconds of a tied playoff game are a test every young star either passes in public or carries. The wider stat sheet from Game 1, a 25-point, 11-rebound performance by Gabby Williams for Golden State in the other semifinal, underlines the pattern of the week: the challengers are not surviving these games, they are winning them.

Results are the floor of sports coverage, not the ceiling. A score tells you who won; the game usually turned on a possession, a matchup or a decision that a box score flattens. Our Sports desk reads the sequence back, places the result in the standings and the season, and is careful to label the difference between what happened, what it means and what merely might happen next.

No team in WNBA history has come back from 0-2 down in a five-game series, a fact now hanging over both the Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces. History is not destiny, but it is a scouting report on how hard the climb is: win three straight elimination games against a confident opponent that has already solved you twice.

Game 3 takes the series to Brooklyn, where the Liberty's season is on the line, and to Las Vegas in the other semifinal on the same night. The Dream need one win from three games; the champions need a perfect week. Expect rotations to shorten and the defending champions to play their stars until the game is decided.
