Tamil cinema has a new benchmark — and it took just two days to set. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has reportedly crossed &rupee;200 crore in worldwide gross, with approximately &rupee;209.10 crore banked after Friday, October 16 — one of the fastest starts in the history of Indian cinema.

The Times of India’s tracking puts day-two India collections at &rupee;35.60 crore net, taking the domestic two-day net to &rupee;95.30 crore, with &rupee;97 crore from overseas — on top of a record &rupee;125.25 crore worldwide opening, according to NewsNation’s report. Advance bookings had already signalled the frenzy, with opening-day admissions near 3.75 million across India.

A new benchmark

The speed matters more than the total. Crossing &rupee;200 crore in 48 hours puts Jailer 2 among the fastest Indian films ever to the mark — a pace that redefines what a Tamil release can do, and a figure that would have been unthinkable for the industry even five years ago. Director Nelson Dilipkumar, reuniting with Rajinikanth as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian alongside Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and SJ Suryah, has now delivered the franchise’s biggest chapter.

The run is unfolding in a crowded box-office season — and unlike Hollywood’s franchise machine, it rests on one 75-year-old star’s shoulders.

What’s next

Trade trackers caution the figures are estimates, not audited totals, and different services will report slightly different numbers. But the trajectory is unmistakable: if the weekend holds, Jailer 2 will set records Tamil cinema chases for years — and fuel inevitable talk of a third instalment.

For the industry, the deeper story is demographic and durable. A 75-year-old star drawing this kind of opening-weekend crowd defies every assumption about ageing audiences and franchise fatigue. Rajinikanth’s pull is not nostalgia — it is a living, growing phenomenon, and Jailer 2 is its latest proof.
